Opioids

Opioids are types of drugs that are used to reduce pain, however they can be misused and become addictive. Examples of opioids are codeine (Tylenol 1, 2, 3 or 4), morphine, oxycodone (Percocet), hydromorphone (Dilaudid), fentanyl, and heroin. 

If you take any of these drugs, you should speak to your healthcare provider about the best plan for you. Some of the options they may suggest include:

• Stopping use / abstinence before pregnancy
• A taper program (slowly reducing your use and coming off of it)
• Entering a drug treatment program
• Drug counselling
• Opiate antagonist therapy (OAT) such as methadone or buprenorphine

If you do become pregnant, you should not stop taking opioids as withdrawal can cause problems in your pregnancy and baby. You may increase your risk of possible complications such as miscarriage or early labour.
